چکیده

Standard grammar formalisms are defined without reflection of the incremental, serial and context-dependent nature of language processing; any incrementality must therefore be reflected by independently defined parsing and/or generation techniques, and context-dependence by separate pragmatic modules. This leads to a poor setup for modelling dialogue, with its rich speaker-hearer interaction and high proportion of contextdependent and apparently grammatically ill-formed utterances. Instead, this paper takes an inherently incremental grammar formalism, Dynamic Syntax (DS) (Kempson et al., 2001), proposes a context-based extension and defines corresponding context-dependent parsing and generation models together with a resulting natural definition of contextdependent well-formedness. These are shown to allow a straightforward model of otherwise problematic dialogue phenomena such as shared utterances, ellipsis and alignment. We conclude that language competence is a capacity for dialogue.

Multimodal Dialogue System Grammars∗

We describe how multimodal grammars for dialogue systems can be written using the Grammatical Framework (GF) formalism. A proof-of-concept dialogue system constructed using these techniques is also presented. The software engineering problem of keeping grammars for different languages, modalities and systems (such as speech recognizers and parsers) in sync is reduced by the formal relationship ...

Robust parsing of utterances in negotiative dialogue

The rapidly increasing number of spoken-dialogue systems have led to numerous robust parsers for limited domains having been constructed during the last decade. By “parsing” we here mean a mapping from the input utterance to a context-independent semantic representation. By “robust” we mean that the parser will give a reasonable result even on very noisy input. In simple spoken-dialogue applica...

Efficient Parsing of Domain Language

We present a new framework for specializing both Broad-Coverage Grammars and probabilistic parsers to limited domains of language use. This framework exploits statistically measurable biases in a limited domain to fit the parser coverage to the domain with manageable accuracy loss. An algorithm is presented and applied to the DataOriented Parsing model. We exhibit empirical results concerning t...

Partitioning Grammars and composing Parsers

GLR parsers have been criticized by various authors for their potentially large sizes. Other parsers also have individual weaknesses and strengths. Our heterogeneous parsing algorithm is based on GLR parsers that handle the size and other problems by partitioning the grammarduring compilingand assembling the partitioned sub-grammars during parsing. We discuss diierent parsers for diierent gramm...
